My Musical Voyage

Hello again!
As i had a vacation after the first year of my college ended, i had a lot of time to do anything. Just like the previous summer, i wanted to do something productive(i did a course on java). I was thinking of  learning a new technology again but this time i went for something else. As i always had wished  to learn music, i started searching for an institute for it. Initially i thought i would learn guitar or something but since i watched The Great Anoushka Shankar playing raag 'Jod' on youtube on sitaar, Indian classical music got into my head. So i thought i would learn sitar but it was a little costly, i delayed it a little. Then i watched another video, this time Pt. Kuldeep Sagar teaching his students raag 'Yaman' and it was so awesome that i enrolled for vocals in a prestigious institute named Pracheen Kala Kendra.

On the first day we are told to practice 'Sa' by humming and singing with harmonium. So basically we have to match our voices with the sound produced by the harmonium. It's like tuning our vocal chords. Then we have to practice all the other notes as well which are 'sa', 're', 'ga', 'ma', 'pa', 'dha', 'ni'.   All the swar(s) produce a different feeling. There were a lot of other students as well. Young, old, college  going, professionals, house wives, kids and a lot. All of them doing "Riyaaz" or practicing. I started on the very first day and it felt so good practicing with harmonium that i didn't realize when it passed three hours. The first few days were so good and enthusiastic that i decided to buy a harmonium. After i got my harmonium i have been practicing on it, almost daily.

Our teacher is a very lovely lady with always a smile on her face. Her voice is so melodious and soothing that she makes everyone feel whatever she sings. She is a great devotee of Krishna and makes a trip to Vrindavan whenever she gets the chance. Most of the days we chant hymns which are very peace giving. The classes are not just about honing the voice or playing the harmonium but an altogether journey to a peaceful life and being closer to the nature.

Since the day i started learning music, my life has become a lot easier and happy. I have never felt as peaceful, until. i am learning everyday. And the institute has introduced us to some great names such as Payal Ramchandani, Prateek Chaudhri, Vishwa Mohan Bhatt and Shobha Koser ji. So it's been a great journey for me. Let's see what will i learn next summer.
